About the Opportunity:
A new time-limited entity will deepen and expand the capacity, impact, and sustainability of grassroots movements for racial justice and social transformation in California. Through additive and synergistic offerings, the organization will support changemakers and groups in catalyzing innovations in movement strategy, power-building, intergenerational leadership development, and collective long-term sustainability and resilience. Through a network of physical and virtual centers, the organization will build infrastructure to fuel transformative structural change across California, serving hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of grassroots leaders. The focus includes organizing strategy and innovation, healing and culture, network of centers, regional ecosystems, movement strategy and innovation, and learning and impact.
The inaugural Director of Operations and Culture will play a critical role in shaping and cementing the organization’s culture and operations systems while ensuring smooth daily operations. This position provides strategic leadership to align people and culture strategies, organizational outcomes, operational capacity, and long-term financial sustainability. It is part of a collaborative, fast-paced team responsible for HR/personnel, tech, security, administrative and legal compliance, and staff development and cohesion. This role reports to the Deputy Director of Operations & Culture and supervises the Operations Manager.
Responsibilities:
• Provide oversight, leadership, and management of organizational systems, policies, and procedures to foster a culture of care, discipline, resilience, and innovation
• Collaborate with program teams to assess operational needs and design and execute plans for program initiatives
• Support establishment of a positive, values-aligned, cohesive culture fostering a healthy, joyful, inclusive, and high-impact workplace
• Establish clear, values-driven expectations and practices for staff conduct, communication, decision-making, and accountability
• Manage transformative HR practices including onboarding, supervision, evaluation, staff development, political education, and employee engagement
• Support development and facilitation of monthly all-staff meetings, staff trainings, and biannual retreats
• Contribute to completion and implementation of HR systems and procedures ensuring legal compliance and risk management
• Oversee management of the Professional Employer Organization and hiring processes, including 10-12 new hires in 2026
• Deliver senior leadership and strategic oversight to ensure infrastructure, systems, culture, and policies reflect organizational values
• Analyze integration needs and co-create practices and processes supporting interconnectedness
• Oversee implementation of Asana project management protocols and Google Drive filing protocols; support staff skill development
• Develop protocols to maintain ease-of-use and security of operational and programmatic information systems (CRM, Asana, Google Drive)
• Supervise Operations Manager with weekly check-ins, progress reports, and annual performance reviews
• Adapt responsibilities as the organization grows beyond the transition phase
Requirements:
• Extensive experience as a collaborative leader in complex, values-driven environments
• Strategic systems thinker with the ability to see organizational interdependencies and design scalable, people-centered strategies aligned with mission and values
• Proven transformational change leader who navigates complexity with clarity, courage, emotional maturity, and integrity
• Strong operational and people-management skills including HR, compliance, staff development, and culture-building
• Experience managing organizational systems, policies, and procedures with attention to legal compliance and risk management
• Skilled in project management tools and information system protocols, specifically Asana and Google Drive
• Ability to supervise and develop staff effectively
• Excellent communication, facilitation, and leadership skills
