2. About the Opportunity:
The Senior Payroll Manager role is essential for transitioning payroll operations from a PEO to an internal function within the organization. This position is responsible for managing accurate and compliant payroll for over 500 employees across multiple entities and for establishing a scalable, internal payroll team. The role ensures payroll integrity and compliance while collaborating across departments to support ongoing payroll system implementation and process improvements.
3. Responsibilities:
- Manage end-to-end payroll operations across two legal entities, processing four payroll cycles monthly for salaried and hourly employees
- Lead the payroll transition from PEO to internal HRIS (Rippling), coordinating with People teams and vendors
- Ensure timely and accurate payroll tax filings and payments at federal, state, and local levels
- Oversee benefits-related payments and deductions including 401(k) and health premiums
- Maintain payroll system configurations and serve as payroll administrator for Rippling
- Establish and maintain internal controls over payroll processes
- Partner with Accounting to reconcile payroll data and ensure accurate financial reporting
- Address employee payroll inquiries with professionalism and discretion
- Collaborate with People, Legal, and Accounting teams to support audits and improve payroll controls
- Monitor payroll compliance with regulations and drive remediation efforts
- Document payroll processes and controls to support scalability
- Recruit, onboard, and manage payroll team members as the function grows
4. Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or equivalent experience; CPP certification preferred
- 7 to 8+ years of multi-state, multi-entity payroll experience in a similarly sized organization
- Proficient with modern HRIS platforms, preferably Rippling, with experience in payroll system implementations
- Expertise in payroll tax compliance and filings
- Experience with internal controls and audit support
- Knowledge of benefits administration as it relates to payroll
- Previous people-management experience or readiness to lead a payroll team
- Strong Excel skills and ability to manage complex payroll and ledger data
- Effective communication skills with empathy and discretion
- High attention to detail and ability to work independently and build new processes
5. Pay Range and Compensation Package:
- Expected base salary range: $145,000 to $165,000
